Lake in Willinghurst Guildford area

Saturday 13th of June 2009 was all about trying different bait presentations and mixing up flavours. The weather was good and sunny with some cloud which made for perfect conditions. I fished my local lake and arrived really early to get a good day on the lake. I had the lake to myself and my mate so we set up at opposite swims. After 5 or so hours with no fish (I’ve never blanked on this lake) and my mate having 4 out I decided to go back and try a lake in Willinghurst Guildford area. The weather had taken a turn and was showing signs of rain. It started to spit throughout this next session but that didn’t seem to affect the fishing.

Shortly after setting up I had a take on a BBQ 15mm with tutti megafish chops in a PVA bag and some pellets thrown in the margins. It was a small fish but saved a day of blanking. I later had a run on my second rod and it again was a small carp on a BBQ 15mm with BBQ pva chops and pellets again.

My final fish of the day came right at the end of the session. I was doing the "lucky lay downs" where the rods and left down on the bank without bank sticks or alarms. My mate told me if you leave the rods down you will see the line pull when you get a bite. Not long later my rod was dragging across my peg and I was lucky to get a hand on it. The carp wasn’t big by any stretch but the clutch was a bit too tight I think. This carp was on a Tutti megafish I think or possibly another BBQ with PVA chops and a method mix of bloodworm pellets, 10mm scopex boilies and breadcrumb with pellets too.

Now being peg 13 I was obviously going to have some problems. I casted my tutti megafish boilie with pva chops into the middle of my swim and when I had a run on it a bigger fish steamed to a post set up in the middle of the lake and snagged me up. This fish felt pretty good so I was annoyed to lose it. My mate convinced me the post was a good place to fish and also we saw a lot of action around the post so decided to wang a rig out close to the post. I got it on the far side of the post, a mistake I would regret later. Just as we were packing up the rod tip ripped to the right and as I got to it the carp and began playing it, it had again snagged me up against the post again. I had lost me second one on the post and gave it a rest from that area from then on. This was taken on a peach and pepper 18mm trimmed down with peach PVA chops inside. It showed the bait worked well but that I was too slow for the take.

I also lost a carp in the middle of the sesh that either didn’t get hooked properly or had enough time to get the hook out because of a slack line as I was reeling in. This one was on a BBQ boilie again.  All the carp were caught on braided hook links between 4-7 inches long, with korda kurved B and wide gape B hooks in size 10. Great baits even if the fish are getting smaller for me.

A total of 6 runs and 3 fish landed in a few hours on an afternoon session.

More to come
