Fishing on the A1 Lakes

20/11/2009

Hi Leigh its Joe Townhill as it’s the end of the month I thought I would let you know how I’ve getting on with your bait. I chose the scopex squid and red robin as I have had success on baits with red robin in them in the past.

My first session was on the A1 pits a couple of weeks back. I just had a 24 hour session at the weekend so I decided to fish one of the smaller lakes. I walked a few of the lakes and ended up on pit 4 on the A1 bank. I fished a small bay to the right of the swim due to the wind pushing into it and I had seen a few fish moving around the margins. I fished one rod on an inline set up with 18mm bottom bait tight up to some fallen trees that were submerged under water. I baited this swim with about 20 to 30 baits but throughout the session I only had a few liners. I fished my second rod in the middle of the bay on a chod rig using one of the 15mm pop-ups drilled out with some cork for a bit of extra buoyancy. I placed about 20 free offerings around it and had a few pick-ups through the day but at around 6 o’clock the next morning I had screaming run but when I bent into it everything went slack I was devastated. The third rod was baited with one of the pink fluro pop-ups on a chod rig which I just casted around the open water as a single hookbait, unfortunately it didn’t cause any interest.

My luck came during a mid week session on a small water near Lincoln. I arrived early the Thursday morning to find the lake to myself. I set up on the road bank and decided to fish two rods on the same patch of bait over a nice gravel spot I found in around 12foot of water. I fished one rod on a chod rig with a 15mm pop-up and the other on a trimmed down 18mm bottom bait. These were both fished over around 30 whole baits and a few chops. Thursday came and went with just a few liners so I was confident for the night ahead. Nothing came through the night and it was around 1 o’clock Friday afternoon when my left hand rod screamed away I lifted into what felt like a massive fish and after a good fight I landed the fish and was a little disappointed when it only went 12.4lb on the scales but the little common was welcome all the while.

I re-baited and re-cast the rod and at around 12 o’clock I had another run on the right hand rod this also felt a good sized fish and after a hard fight in the deep water I netted it and the mirror weighed in at 20.8lb I was over the moon.

I packed up the following morning and was really pleased on the few days fishing.

I had another session on the A1 pits this weekend fishing the same kind of tactics but failed to even get a run, but I pre baited a few swims for the next time so hopefully I may be in for a fish in the near future.

Tight lines Joe Townhill
