27lb Common on Squid & Octopus

12/02/2011

Back down my local lake for the 2nd time of the year on February the 12th for a 1 night session. I decide to fish my favourite swim on the lake and I opted to fish my right hand rod to the right of the swim where there was an 8ft channel off a point. The channel is 15 yards off the point so I walked round to the point and laced the bar using a catapult and put in  30 whole and broken up 15mm squid and octopus boilies over the spot. On the hair I used a 15mm squid and octopus boilie with a little 4 bait stringer. I then placed the left hand rod a couple of yards of the island which is 60- 70 yards. I used a 15mm squid and octopus on the hair with a little 4 bait stringer in conjunction with a size 8 korda kaptor. At 6 o'clock in the evening I received a couple of bleeps on the left hand rod then the reel went into meltdown and then I hit into it applying steady pressure and keeping the rod low to stop it getting into the snags,  I then managed to turn it and got it coming towards me. It plodded underneath the rod tip for a while then it popped up and went into the back of the net. A common which was in pristine condition was lying there however it wasn’t that big but I still felt happy, the common weighed 15lb. I put a fresh rig on and bait on with another 4 bait stringer then chucked it back to the island as close as I could in the darkness. I then led back down on my bedchair for a while and then the right hand rod ripped off and when I applied pressure to it I could tell it was a big fish. It tried getting round the point but I turned it in time and got it under the rod tip. It was plodding round the rod tip for around 5- 10mins then I saw the fish pop up and it looked like a good fish. I then slipped it in the net and new it was a twenty. I left it in the water while I got the scales ready and the weigh sling out and a bucket of water. I then hoisted it out and saw it was a big common. It was hooked in the bottom lip and it definitely was not coming out, I put the fish in the weigh sling and hoisted her up on the scales and they went round to 27lb 4oz a new PB common. I thought that’s a good start to the year with a beautiful 27 common. My dad some pics then slipped her back. Also my dad had fish of 15lb 2oz and 16lb 2oz all on squid and octopus. What a winter session and cant wait to get back down there.
