Southlake is a council owned water so still observes a close season. This was good because it gave us the chance to learn the topography of the water and apply the bait once some good spots were found. We still had Redlands to fish as this water had no close season. Timbo was popping down every couple of days to look at the fish. During the close season the carp seem to know it is safe to venture near to the margins it was great. It gave us a chance to see the fish and what we were fishing for. The pressure was building and he wanted the season to start, his wife was expecting a baby and he was due on the 19th of June. Timbo would only have a couple of days after the start of the season to fish, and then it would be all hands on deck for the new arrival. So we fished the other lake until South lake re-opened.
It was on one of these trips to Redlands I had a blinding result. It was April and the weather was unusually hot, the temperature was hitting 20 degrees. Timbo was struggling trying to get a bite from the bottom, so I decided to put a zig rig out and was getting results, in the space of one afternoon I managed 3 fish. Not massive but they were carp never the less.
An angler in the background is looking at his rods in disbelief as I pull another carp on to the bank!
All the fish were between 16lb and 20lb, I’m not sure what the weights were but they’re irrelevant really. It was a good days angling with a totally different approach from the norm.
