Southlake success!

Rob and I have been fishing Southlake for two seasons now, using various different baits and various different rigs and up until this Summer we had very little success, however hearing of Ocean Fresh through the ‘grapevine’ led us to some very welcome action!

I invested in some OCEAN FRESH Red Shrimp & Garlic 15mm boilies, I just have a thing for red baits having had a few decent results on other waters, I opted to fish with ‘Flouro Carbon choddies’ which consists of a 3 foot flourcarbon leader and 1 1/2inch curved hook link attached by a swivel and secured by two 4mm rubber beads, which is a rig unashamedly copied from a well know Carp Tackle Company TV programme!!I set up in the bay and cast the rigs to about 50yds range with a nice bright pop-up tied to each and over the top of each spot went thirty 15mm RSG boilies – whether it was the new approach I was using I don’t know but I was just felt very confident, it was just one of those sessions that you think you are going to do well?

Anyhow I settled down for the night with just the odd knock, then at 2am the right hand rod roared off, a brief scrap followed and before I knew it, my first Southlake Carp was on the mat a lovely mirror of 26lbs!

"Chuffed to say the least!"

After the weighing/pictures were done it was back in the bag for a couple of hours kip, the rest of the night passed quietly and when morning arrived I thought that would be the end of the action for this session, however at 11am the left hand rod burst into life and again after another short battle I landed a beautiful 23lb Half Linear

"......month’s of blanking and now two (very) nice fish in one session!"

To say I was pleased is a massive understatement!!!! The best part of this capture was that my Mrs and little boy had just turned up to say hello, when I had the run! My little boy now expects me to catch a fish every time he comes around to see me!!! I wish!

Rob on the other hand had switched to OCEAN FRESH GLM a move that was to prove very successful! He chose to fish towards the bottom of the lake near the ‘Armchair’ swim.

Knowing that he was going to fish the following Friday night he set out to bait the chosen spots each morning leading up to the session.  Arriving at the lake each morning at 7am he put out ½ kilo of GLM out over both spots before clearing off to work. Friday arrived and he duly set up in the chosen swim, both rods were set up with 8inch Korda Hybrid soft hook links and snowman style arrangement on each, a 18mm GLM bottom bait and 15mm GLM pop-up with a shot placed on the hair below the baits to balance the rig in such a way that it sits upright just off the bottom of the lake, he checked the buoyancy of the rig in the margins, happy with the presentation he cast out onto the baited areas – again this was a method that we had heard other Anglers had good results on – you can not emphasise enough  finding out what works for other people! Information like this can and did prove invaluable.

The night was quiet, before a rude awakening at 5am when a very angry Carp screamed off across the lake, this carp put up a very good fight kiting left and right before eventually tiring and after 15 mins it was in the net. Shining the head torch into the net the outline of a large Common carp appeared.

Onto the scales and it went 32lb, a fantastic fish in anyone’s book a 30lb Common Carp is something that most Carp Anglers wait a very long time for and Rob managed it after careful application of bait and rig in a relatively short period of time.

So two different sessions, both employing quality bait that we now know has been used to good effect on Southlake (and elsewhere) and bait that we both continue to use on a regular basis!

Hopefully this will be the first of many articles on Ocean Fresh success!!!
