The waggler is a versatile type of float which is attached to the underside of a float. When Im waggler fishing with soft hooker pellets, I like to use clear or crystal loaded wagglers; I think the more inconspicuous the end tackle is, the better your chances of increasing your catch. Loaded wagglers can also help to prevent tangles.
Pleasure Angling Equipment
As a pleasure angler, Im not usually targeting large numbers of fish to weigh in, so I probably fish heavier than most match anglers. Instead I always try and keep my line-to-hook ratio constant. Fortunately thats quite easy when Im using soft pellets; the bigger bait means I can use a bigger hook. I choose to use a size 16 Kamasan B911 wide gape barbless pellet hook, which I find strong enough to handle any larger fish while giving enough to easily cope with smaller silver fish. They all love soft pellets. Another personal preference is that these are eyed hooks.
My all-singing set up is 6lb Drennan double strength mainline with a 4lb hooklink. I attach the float to the line with a float adaptor or similar to allow for quick changes, if theyre needed. The float depends on the fishing location and the weather conditions. But the rule of thumb is to fish as light as you can. All floats indicate the additional shotting needed to present correctly, e.g. +3 no4. This is the total weight needed, but not necessarily what you should use. So break that down to 6 x no.6 or 4 x no.6 4 x no.8 and so on, to evenly distribute the weight down the line. And again, to minimise tangles, remember - less is more!
