Furnace Lakes near Horsham, Sussex

Just back from a weekend fishing with my boy, weekend of highs and lows and thats not just the weather. The elements were against us 40-60 MPH winds, Heavy spells of rain, followed by cold spells and very still periods without a ripple.

We went to Furnace Lakes near Horsham, Sussex and fished the Main lake.

We got there after 2pm on Saturday so a slow start to the day, set up and then the skys opened. Good job Lewis loves the rain, though even his enthusiasm drained after a few hours of constant downpour. We settled into our sleeping bags for the night at 7 with only the wind setting the alarms off until 3am when the bream found our bait, then at 4 the first break through came and we landed a 9lb mirror carp, well chuffed, first fish in a month. Then a few more bream fell to the rod. Breakfast followed by a quiet day in the occasional sun. The day went really slow until 1pm then the rod sprang into life with a roar and a half hour battle with a Ghost carp saw my best fish ever a 15 lb beast.

We hired a bait boat this weekend to allow us to get to the other side of the lake, all baits were boat delivered to reduce the splash and ensure a tight baiting pattern. I used the Robin Reds on a bed of crushed robins and added a little Spod mix to get the fish on the hunt. Techniques were varied but the best action came to the winter chod rig with the bait close to the hook.

The Robin Reds were also used to good effect on the Brick ponds near Edlington, Yorks, where no fish were landed but quite a few hits were recorded and lines snapped due to the sub surface topography.
